Dental implants Geelong
A dental implant replaces the root portions of a tooth lost due to trauma, infection or extraction. The implant is a titanium screw that is surgically placed in the upper or lower jaw and allowed to bond to the bone. The implant then acts as the foundation for the replacement tooth. If several teeth have been lost, implants can provide support for bridgework to replace all missing teeth.
Once dental implants have been chosen as a treatment option, the experienced Geelong dentists at Wyatt Ryan Dental will determine the optimum position and shape of the replacement teeth. This, in turn, will then determine the optimum position for the implants to be placed.
Conventional full dentures, especially lower dentures, can be hard to keep in place and can make biting and chewing difficult. Implant-supported dentures are more comfortable and stable and provide a far better chewing capacity.
The simplest form of treatment to support a full lower denture is to place two implants in the front part of the lower jaw. A lower denture is then fastened to these implants with an attachment. The denture is still removed for cleaning but is much more firmly retained and subsequently more stable. Up to six implants can be placed to support a lower fixed bridge which is screwed into place and functions like your own natural teeth.
Maintaining implants is also an extremely important part of their long-term success, and our dentists emphasise this during all treatment stages and recall visits.
Whether you have lost a single tooth, several teeth, or all of your teeth, dental implants can provide you with a secure, fully functioning dentition that is also highly aesthetic.
