Oral Care Tips from Geelong’s Leading Dentists

August 11, 2020

While our team of dentists enjoy seeing you in our Geelong clinic, the goal is always to maintain your oral hygiene so that your appointments to us are less frequent, ideally around twice a year. This can be achieved by taking care of your teeth and engaging in healthy oral behaviours.

A dental care routine is incredibly important and there are many things you can do on a daily basis to ensure your oral health. We at Wyatt Ryan Dental Surgeons recommend that you do the following:

Use the right toothbrush

Often-times, clients will think that brushing hard and thoroughly is the key to clean teeth, however, brushing too hard can be very damaging to your gums and can cause bleeding. You want to find a  happy medium between a hard-bristle and soft-bristle toothbrush that your teeth feel comfortable with. It is recommended that after a few months you replace your toothbrush as they begin to soften and become less effective.

Drink enough water

The answer to everything is always – drink more water! and in the case of dental health, it certainly is. By drinking more water throughout the day, you avoid mouth dryness which leads to plague accumulation. In order to keep sensitive tissue moist and promote healthy active saliva, you must drink a good amount of water a day.

Floss at least once a day

Flossing is without a doubt the most effective way to remove plaque in the areas of the mouth that can’t be reached by your toothbrush. Without regular flossing, plaque can build up and cause gum disease and tooth decay.

Eat a tooth-friendly diet

Diet is paramount when it comes to maintaining your oral hygiene. We recommend eating tooth-friendly snacks in between meals such as natural yogurt, popcorn, soups, cheese, and fresh fruit. We typically advise against sweet and carbonated drinks and instead encourage dairy products such as plain milk.

Stop smoking

If you are an active smoker, it is in your best interest for the longevity of your dental health that you quit. Smoking not only damages the internal organs but severely stains the teeth and can lead to long term problems like gum disease, bacterial plague, and mouth cancer.

Our friendly and expert team at Wyatt Ryan Dental Surgeons are more than happy to guide you through a dental care routine, that will assist the maintenance of your oral hygiene. If it has been a while since your last checkup with one of our Geelong dentists then contact us today on (03) 5229 5547 and make an appointment. We look forward to hearing from you!
